September 2016 – LRT Notes
1. Welcome, Overview & Warm Up. Louise Music opened the meeting, introduced Mia Tsui (our Collective Impact Project Manager) and presented the focus for the meeting—to review our workplan, discuss and provide input to our Listening Team and Data Teams’ work in progress.
As a warm up, first in pairs and then as a whole group, we discussed the chart to the left, taken from a Washington Post Article entitled: The Stunning Divide in American Creativity by Christopher Ingraham.
2. Workplan Review. Mia and Louise projected the Collective Impact workplanchart and walked us through the details and the group responded with comments, ideas, questions. The chart is expected to evolve with our thinking.
Discussion highlights included:
Teams – roles, responsibilities, participants and timelines. Group discussion and recommendations included: newsletter/communication updates; clarifying terminology; being clear and coherent about our work with other efforts, i.e. Create CA art education mapping; efforts to engage more funders via Funding Team; adding goals/benchmark charting; resource identification and opportunities for conferences/presenting. All these actions are part of our work this year.
Resources – Paul Born’s Tamarack Institute—Community Change Institute – upcoming conference in Toronto. Ann Wettrich and Carolyn Carr will be attending to bring back new tools, strategies and resources to support our work—with a focus on communication and the work of the Listening Team. Many online resources are available as well. See new Collective Impact 3.0 – An Evolving Framework for Community Change article by Liz Weaver and Marc Cabaj and webinar. Builds on the “good bones” of collective impact with best practices from social change work—shifting the paradigm from management to movement building.
3. Team Breakout Planning. We split into two groups–Listening Team and Data Team for deeper discussion and brainstorming, ending with whole group share out exchange.
Listening Team – Reviewed the listening-survey-template and context statement, along with listening-analytics-chart organizing data from listening surveys into large bucket categories. We thought about:
How we are capturing, synthesizing and meaning making from what is coming in. Hoping to get some tools for this from Tamarack.
Interview questions and research methods. Considered what we need to know to create an effective community plan.
Demographics of our current respondents. Who do we need to talk to, where are the gaps. We brainstormed ideas and contacts to add to the growing listening-workplan-chart.
Questioning our assumptions. We acknowledged the importance of talking to people from different perspective and who are not in agreement with our assumptions in order to generate new thinking and strategies for community engagement .
Professional Training. We recognized the need for training our interviewers. Angela Zusman can put together a training and possibly a webinar that we can post to support those who can’t attend training.
Data Team – Discussed but came up with more questions than answers.
How can we tap into existing data—both qualitative and quantitative?
How useful is data? What are we gathering, for what purpose? Do we have the data to make our case?
Questioning the term and idea of data. Can be off-putting, alienating, politcally charged? Who does it serve? Who controls and has access to the data? Is it available to the people most in need to move the needle on change? What counts as data?
How do we evaluate progress on our goals? What are the benchmarks?
What data is needed that we do not have?
Relationship of listening to data. What questions emerge within a dialogue? What questions does the respondent have?
